LDS Disaster Relief
Conway 1st Ward
Slidell, LA

Five of us left Jacksonville right after Stake Priesthood and headed for Slidell.  We worked On Friday and Saturday.  Four more left Friday afternoon and worked Saturday and Sunday.  I was in the first group.  We arrived at Slidell about 5:30 a.m. Friday and slept until 7:00.  When we got up I called the Bishop's Storehouse, which was serving as the command center for the relief effort.  When we arrived at the Storehouse, since none of us had ever been to one before, we were given a tour and an explanation of how it was organized and run.  After we got our assignments and some supplies we headed out.

On our way to the first job Friday morning we took a wrong turn and ended up down by Lake Ponchatrain.  The area next to the lake was the hardest hit, nearly the entire area had been flattened.  This picture is of one of the building that was still partially standing.
Our first assignment, tree and shed removal.  This is the tree in the front yard.  The shed was out back and had been labeled "destroyed" by the insurance and the owner wanted it removed before he moved back so his son would not play in it and risk getting hurt.
Chris up the tree trimming the limbs prior to us felling the trunk.  Don't worry, the power lines you see are actually on the other side of the road.
Our second house Friday, clear the fallen trees from the back yard.
Before Picture.
Compare this to the before picture, it is nearly the same angle.  Use the post as a reference.
It was to late to start another job after we finished the second house, so we drove around to be sure we would have no trouble locating our first job the next morning.  On the way there, we found this yard.
They were picking up the debris while we were adding to the pile.
Saturday afternoon we got our first look of a house that no one had been in since the flood.  The blue tint is form the tarp over the skylight.  The pictures do not do justice to the smell.
There was a hole in the roof, so they had mold and water damage in the roof as well.
This is the front room, the owners daughter was staying here.
